Do Mormons Drink Coffee?

All religions have different beliefs and different ways to have a relationship with God.

Mormons believe that they shouldn’t drink Coffee since they consider their bodies temples of God.

When I was taking the missionary discussions, the missionaries introduced what Mormons call the Word of Wisdom.

The word of Wisdom is a Mormon code of health that prohibits using illegal drugs, drinking coffee and tea and consuming Tobacco.

When I heard about the Word of Wisdom, some things made sense and other didn’t but I decided to stop drinking Coffee because I really wanted to join the Mormon Church.

My reasons to abstain from drinking coffee are the same reasons that lots of people within Mormonism have for not drinking Coffee.

Now that I have left Mormonism, I started drinking Coffee again.

Can Mormons Drink Iced Coffee?

Since Doctrine and Covenants says that you aren’t allowed to drink hot drinks, some Mormons with a desire to drink coffee assumed that drinking Iced Coffee wasn’t against Mormonism code of health.

The point is that the Church prohibits drinking coffee regardless how coffee shops call it

Can Mormons Drink Decaf Coffee?

Remember that some mormons think that the Church has a position against caffeine but the LDS church didn’t have nothing against it.

Some Mormons probably assume that drinking coffee was OK however the Church has openly stated that drinking coffee regardless of the name of the product is a violation against the word of wisdom.

Mormons Official Position on Coffee

You might be thinking how far Mormons adhere to the Coffee prohibition.

This is what the LDS Church has to say:

The word coffee isn’t always in the name of coffee drinks. So, before you try what you think is just some new milkshake flavor, here are a couple of rules of thumb: (1) If you’re in a coffee shop (or any other shop that’s well-known for its coffee), the drink you’re ordering probably has coffee in it, so either never buy drinks at coffee shops or always ask if there’s coffee in it. (2) Drinks with names that include café or caffé, mocha, latte, espresso, or anything ending in -ccino are coffee and are against the Word of Wisdom.

Vaping, Coffee, Tea, and Marijuana

Mormons, Coffee and Science

I challenge you to ask a Mormon why they abstain from Coffee, I bet they will tell you all sort of things.

Some of them will tell you that coffee creates dependency and some will even call it an addiction.

Of course, the argument in favor of not drinking coffee as it was an addictive as other hard core drugs is crazy talk.

Mormons might say that Coffee addiction is a thing but Mormons don’t have a position against caffeine and caffeine is the usual suspect when health problems are related to Coffee-

This is a extract taken from the Official LDS Church website:

Doctrine and Covenants 89:9 says we shouldn’t drink “hot drinks.” The only official interpretation of this term is the statement made by early Church leaders that it means tea and coffee. Caffeine is not specifically mentioned as the reason not to drink these drinks.

Is there anything wrong with drinking sodas with caffeine in them? Is caffeine bad? The Word of Wisdom doesn’t mention it.

Does that make sense?

If there is something wrong with Coffee, it has to be caffeine but Mormons are allowed to consume as much as they want since that it is not prohibited in their code of health.

What happens if A Mormon Drinks Coffee?

The discipline in the church depends on your background as a Mormon since there are many types of members.

For instance, there are members who have been in the Church of all their lives while others might have joined the church a few weeks ago.

In my own experience, I am sure that drinking Coffee might prevent members of the LDS church from entering the temple,  holding a position in the church, taking the sacrament but they won’t be heavily disciplined or excommunicated.
