Can Mormons Eat Chocolate?

Some people online are wondering if Mormons can eat Chocolates.

I am not sure where that questions originated but I bet that it has to do with the Word of Wisdom.

The Word of Wisdom is a code of health within Mormonism that prohibits drinking coffee, tea, alcohol and doing drugs.

I also think that this idea that Mormon can’t eat chocolate has to do with caffeine, caffeine is a natural stimulant most commonly found in tea, coffee, and cacao plants.

Mormons don’t drink coffee or tea so I see how a person might conclude that chocolates are also in the list of Mormon prohibitions.

The Church is totally OK with caffeine so there is no prohibition on sodas, chocolates or other caffeinated products.

What Code of Health Prohibits Coffee and Not caffeinated Products?

The Code of Health of Mormonism that raises a lot of questions since some things make some sense and something definitely don’t

Coffee is prohibited and if you want to be found worthy in the eyes of Mormon leaders, you shouldn’t be drinking it.

However you can eat all the chocolate you want and cause a lot of harm to your health without raising any eyebrows.

If you ask Mormons about why prohibiting coffee and tea and why not banning some foods that are far worse than drinking a cup of coffee, they won’t tell that they don’t know.

So the act of abstaining from coffee doesn’t come as a result of reasoning but a desire to obey what Mormon prophets have told.

Word of Wisdom Prohibition

The church in its oficial website clarified the products that you are not allowed to consume

This is the stance of the Church on Coffee and tea:

The word coffee isn’t always in the name of coffee drinks. So, before you try what you think is just some new milkshake flavor, here are a couple of rules of thumb: (1) If you’re in a coffee shop (or any other shop that’s well-known for its coffee), the drink you’re ordering probably has coffee in it, so either never buy drinks at coffee shops or always ask if there’s coffee in it. (2) Drinks with names that include café or caffé, mocha, latte, espresso, or anything ending in -ccino are coffee and are against the Word of Wisdom.
